Match Report: Mumbai Indians v Highveld Lions (Match 1)

September 10, Johannesburg: CLT20 2010 got under way with Mumbai Indians taking on local favourites Highveld Lions at the Wanderers Stadium. Sachin Tendulkar won the toss and had no hesitation in opting to bowl first, a decision proposed by Shaun Pollock in his pitch discussion with Ravi Shastri.

What was surprising to see was Mumbai opting to open the bowling with medium pacer Ryan McLaren and the left-arm orthodox spin of Ali Murtuza instead of the usual suspects Zaheer Khan and Lasith Malinga. As a result, the Lions lost a couple of wickets early on but went on to make steady progress to bring up their first 50 runs in 7.2 overs. Opener Jonathan Vandiar batted at a brisk pace and put on a partnership of 43 for the third wicket with Vaughn van Jaarsveld. When van Jaarsveld fell with the score at 81, Vandiar, in the company of Neil McKenzie, changed gears. He was severe on the Mumbai bowlers and hit them to all corners of the Wanderers, a big six off Malinga over mid-wicket standing out in his 48-ball knock of 71.

Neil McKenzie, the most experienced of the Lions batsmen, took centre stage at the fall of Vandiar’s wicket and ensured that the Lions innings did not lose momentum at the end. A 30-ball cameo of 56 proved just why he is such a dangerous player. Thanks to his late flourish the Lions ended their innings with a most impressive score of 186 for the loss of five wickets. Zaheer Khan, coming back from injury, had a forgettable day having given away 45 runs while Lasith Malinga was the pick of the MI bolwers with figures of 3 for 33.

MI began their innings with the right intent. Tendulkar and Shikhar Dhawan mixed caution with aggression and added up a 50-run partnership in 6.5 overs. Dhawan, the young southpaw batted well for his 32 off 30 deliveries before falling for an ill advised reverse sweep off Aaron Phangiso. Ambati Rayudu was run-out shortly after but Tendulkar, accompanied by JP Duminy, upped the tempo. The pair were particularly severe on the left-arm spin of Phangiso, the bowler going for 26 runs in two overs.

Tendulkar, who was dropped by Alviro Petersen in the eighth over, scored 69 and his stay at the crease was a study in the art of T20 batting. He fell to Shane Burger against the run of play and his dismissal triggered a collapse with Duminy, Kieron Pollard, Rajagopal Sathish and Harbhajan Singh unable to guide Mumbai home. In the end the Lions bowlers held their nerve and bettered the formidable Mumbai side to delight South African fans and set the tournament off to an interesting start.

Warriors have a great chance in SA: Jacobs

Despite the absence of Wayne Parnell and Jacques Kallis, Warriors skipper Davey Jacobs is confident of his side shining at CLT20.

Q: What are your expectations from the CLT20? 

Davey Jacobs: Well it's obviously very exciting and we've been preparing for it for a while now. I'm really excited about it and our goal is to make the CLT20 our third trophy of the year. 

Q: How do you rate the chances of your team, considering they will be up against teams like IPL champions Chennai Super Kings? 

DJ: We'll definitely be in there with a shot. We have a very well balanced team and as long as we stick to what we do best, we should go a long way in the competition. 

Q: Which team would you rate as the biggest threat? 

DJ: I think every team in the competition will be in with a chance. T20 cricket is very unpredictable and I believe that the team that is best prepared and wants it the most will walk away with it. We'll be ready and hungry, so it’s going to be very exciting. 

Q: There are two spinners in the Warriors team (Johan Botha and Nicky Boje). What role do you foresee for spinners in the side? 

DJ: Spin plays a massive role in T20 cricket all over the world. Johan and Nicky have been very good for us and I expect their skill and experience to be an important part of our bowling attack. 

Q: How do you see the Champions League Twenty20 as a tournament for youngsters? 

DJ: CLT20 is the biggest stage for domestic cricketers and it is a showroom for us as players. Youngsters get to play against some of the best in the world and it is a wonderful opportunity to make a name for themselves. 

Q: Injury has ruled out Wayne Parnell from the side. Who will lead the Warriors’ attack in his absence? 

DJ: Parny [Parnell] is a wonderful talent and he is obviously a massive loss for us. But we have loads of experience in the camp, with guys like [Makhaya] Ntini, [Lonwabo] Tsotsobe, [Juan] Theron, [Garnett] Kruger and the two spinners who'll do the job for us. 

Q: How crucial will the home advantage be for the Warriors? 

DJ: Well obviously we'll know the conditions very well and we'll have the local support so that will definitely be an advantage to us. But you still have to be at your best as this competition has some quality teams in it. 

Q: Jacques Kallis will now play for Royal Challengers Bangalore.  How big a loss is that for the Warriors? 

DJ: I don't think you can replace a guy like Jacques. He has had an incredible career and this is obviously a big loss. But we've got enough depth in the squad and whoever comes in will get the job done.

Freshly retired from Test cricket, Muttiah Muralitharan is already missing playing in the longest format of the game. Murali said farewell in typically excellent fashion after guiding Sri Lanka to a thumping 10-wicket triumph over India at Galle in the first Test of the Micromax Cup.

"I am going to miss the dressing room environment. The challenges of five-day cricket and first and foremost, bowling to great players like Sachin Tendulkar. I will miss this," the incredibly popular off-spinner told PTI.

So does the CSK ace regret announcing his retirement? 

"I don't think it was a premature decision. I was thinking about it since long and I thought it was the perfect time,” said the legend.

Muralitharan never played for records, but such was his talent that the stats men were always kept busy.

“Frankly speaking I was not at all confident of getting eight wickets [I needed] to touch 800. I was not even thinking about that. Winning was more important for me and I was concentrating on that. [I did, however, feel] on the top of the world when I got Pragyan Ojha's wicket," he confessed. "All my teammates hugged me. Everyone was very happy. That was an invaluable moment for me and I can never forget that." 

Muralitharan does not agree that his record is for keeps and no bowler would be able to break it.

"This is cricket. You cannot guarantee anything. Someone may cross the 800 Test wickets mark tomorrow. Even when I started playing I never thought of making a world record one day," said the bowler, who has taken 515 ODI wickets.

Talking about his future plans, Muralitharan wishes to play Twenty20 Cricket for the next couple of years.

"I want to play Twenty20 cricket for the next two or three years. I would love to remain a part of Chennai Super Kings provided the IPL franchise wants me.”

Murali is certainly wanted by the Super Kings and will be looking to claim his second trophy of the year with CSK during CLT20 2010 inSouth Africa.

30 Aug 2010 Bushrangers continue disappointing form The Victorian Bushrangers again failed to live up to the billing of being Big Bash champions as they succumbed to a six run loss to fellow CLT20 aspirants, the South Australian Redbacks in the Top End Twenty20 challenge in Darwin.   The Bushrangers won the toss and elected to bowl, and young paceman James Pattinson ensured that the in- form Michael Klinger was sent packing early on. The Vics were on top after reducing the Redbacks to 3/12 after four overs. But Callum Ferguson and Cameron Borgas played the rescue act to perfection as their partnership helped the Redbacks post a competitive total of 6/110, with Dirk Nannes (three wickets) and James Pattinson (two wickets) both impressing with the ball for the Bushrangers.    But the Vics’ batting continued to fail as Matthew Wade (0), Rob Quiney (7) and John Hastings (9) all failing to cross double figures. Ryan Carters was the only shining light with an impressive innings of 51* but even his heroics were not enough as the Bushrangers required 16 runs off the last over. Carters and Shane Harwood were unable to come up with the goods with the Bushrangers finishing on 4/104 to be defeated by six runs.   And it went from bad to worse for the Bushrangers in the second match of the evening against the Queensland Bulls. A 10-run loss ensured the Big Bash champions go to South Africa low on confidence.   Again the Bushrangers began with much gusto reducing the Bulls to 4/54 at the halfway point, with wickets from Clint McKay, John Hastings (2) and Brad Hodge. But the Bulls eventually ended their innings on 6/121 at the end of their twenty overs.   The Bushrangers’ batting flattered to deceive again as only Rob Quiney (21) and Ryan Carters (21) impressed with the bat, but Big Bash champions had to contend with the all too familiar taste of defeat. The side will have to drastically lift their game by the time they face the Warriors on Sep 13 in their opening CLT20 match in Port Elizabeth.

Double whammy for Oz sides

It wasn’t a good day for either of the Champions League T20 hopefuls from Australia, Victorian Bushrangers and South Australian Redbacks. The two teams were beaten by the Queensland Bulls on the same day in the Top End Twenty20 challenge in Darwin.

In the first match of the day, the Bushrangers were beaten by three wickets in the last over. The Bushrangers could only muster up 109 from their allotted 20 overs, losing seven wickets in the process. But the Big Bash champions staged a comeback of sorts making a game of a relatively small target. Despite all the Bushrangers’ efforts, the Bulls eventually reached their target with three balls to spare.

The Bushrangers’ batting is a cause for concern as the batsmen haven’t found form in the tournament so far.

In the second match of the day, the Bulls continued to be the in-form team beating the Redbacks by four wickets. The Big Bash runners up started well with Michael Klinger’s second half- century in as many days. But despite Klinger’s efforts, the Redbacks finished with 7-129. And the Graham Manou-led side couldn’t stop the Bulls’ charge as the Queensland side reached 6-133 from 18.1 overs to complete a comfortable victory.

Both the Bushrangers and the Redbacks will be looking to lift their performances before the start of Champions League Twenty20 on September 10. And they’ll have a chance to redeem themselves on Sunday when the Redbacks take on the Bushrangers and Bulls on a Super Sunday in Darwin.

Big names in demand for Airtel CLT20

The second edition of the Airtel Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) is shaping as a bigger and better event than last year’s inaugural tournament after the naming of the final 15-player squads.

Three players, all from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), will play for their ‘away’ team rather than their ‘home’ teams. Jacques Kallis, Ross Taylor and Cameron White will line up for RCB in South Africa after being named by their home teams as well as their IPL franchise.

The Airtel CLT20, the grand finale of Twenty20 cricket between the world’s champion teams, will start on 10 September at Wanderers in Johannesburg before ending at the same venue on 26 September.

Shashank Manohar, CLT20 Chairman, said: “The teams named for this year’s Airtel CLT20 would compete with and arguably defeat many of the nations playing international cricket today."

“The squad lists read like a who’s who of world cricket with some of the brightest emerging stars and some of the greatest names to have graced the game.

“Last year’s tournament produced a number of unlikely results with some of the favoured teams eliminated at the group stage. I’m sure this year’s Airtel CLT20 will be no different.”

Dean Kino, CLT20 Governing Council Member and Director of Legal and Business Affairs, said: “CLT20 regulations stipulate that with Jacques Kallis, Ross Taylor and Cameron White playing for their IPL franchise instead of their home teams, RCB must compensate the Warriors, Central Stags and Victorian Bushrangers US$200,000 each respectively.”

“By selecting these three world-class players, RCB has signaled its commitment to claiming world cricket’s richest prize and has put other teams on notice that it is single-mindedly chasing CLT20 glory in September.

“While a number of other players were eligible to play for more than one team in South Africa, no compensation is payable due to their home teams not qualifying for this year’s event.”

The 10 teams are loaded with international stars including Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, Muttiah Muralidaran, Shaun Tait, Mahela Jayawardene, Dale Steyn, Kieron Pollard, Harbhajan Singh and Mike Hussey.

A host of players will attend the official Airtel Champions League Twenty20 event launch in Sandton on Tuesday night (SOuth Africa time), including Sri Lankan star, Muttiah Muralidaran, representing the Chennai Super Kings.

Murali will be joined by some of South Africa’s favourite stars including Makhaya Ntini (Warriors), Albie Morkel (Chennai Super Kings), JP Duminy (Mumbai Indians), Alviro Petersen (Highveld Lions), Justin Kreush (Warriors), Jean Symes (Highveld Lions), Werner Coetzee (Highveld Lions), Wayne Parnell (Warriors) and Ryan McLaren (Mumbai Indians).
